Fascinating Rajasthan Pilgrimage Sites

Dilawara TempleMount Abu, the only hill resort of Rajasthan, is located at a distance of about 185 km from Udaipur and 500 km form Jaipur. Situated at a height of 1,220 m above sea level in the Aravali hills, Mount Abu is picturesquely surrounded by lush vegetation and a beautiful lake named as Lake Nakki. The place is not only famous for its immense natural beauty but also for its importance as a pilgrimage center for Jain and Hindus. The most famous temples and shrines here include Dilwara Jain Temples, Gaumukh Temple, Adhar Devi Temple, and Shri Raghunathji Temple.

Dilwara Jain Temples: Mount Abu is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centers for the Jain, as the place houses the world famous Dilwara temples, considered to be masterpieces of temple architecture. These beautifully carved temples in white marbles are dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras and were constructed between 11th and 13th century A.D. The Vimal Vasahi temple built in 1031 A.D. is the oldest of these and dedicated to the first Tirthankara, Shri Rishavadev. Other important temple in the complex is the Lunvasahi temple, which has a stone image of Jain tirthankara Neminath. The temple has a huge image of Rishavadev. There are many small temples in the complex dedicated to different Tirthankaras. There are 48 pillars in all in the temples. You can see intricately carved images of female figures in dancing poses on some of the pillars.

Other famous temples such as the Gaumukh Temple, which derives its name from a sculpted cow situated in the temple compound, also attracts thousand s of devotees to Mount Abu. Adhar Devi Temple and Shri Raghunathji Temple also draw pilgrims to Mount Abu. Guru Shikar, the highest peak of the Aravali range, located 15 km northeast of Mount Abu is also an important Hindu pilgrimage site that you will visit on your Mount Abu Pilgrimage Tour.
